Stop typing the same password every time
Password-protected PDFs are useful while a file is in transit, but annoying once it's safely on your own device. Bank statements, payslips and utility bills often arrive locked, and entering the password every time you open, merge or print them gets old fast. If you know the password, this tool saves a copy without it, so the file opens directly and works with every other tool.
Some PDFs open without a password but still block printing, copying text or editing. These permission restrictions are set by an owner password. In most cases you can leave the password field empty and the tool removes those restrictions, so you can print, fill in or combine the document freely. Only do this for files you are entitled to use this way.
To be clear about what this tool does not do: it does not crack, guess or brute-force passwords. If a PDF needs a password to open and you don't have it, we can't unlock it — ask the sender for the password instead. Decryption runs with qpdf in your browser through WebAssembly, so the file and the password never leave your device.
Our take
We unlock PDFs that we are entitled to open but that get in the way: bank statements protected with a birthdate password, or a payslip that has to be merged with other files for a loan application.
We type the password once, download the unlocked copy and keep it only as long as we need it. Our routine is to unlock, do the merge or compression, and then protect the final bundle again with Protect PDF if it still leaves our hands.
The pitfall: some files use protection schemes that the browser cannot handle, and a wrong password gives the same error. Double-check the password first. This tool is for your own documents; it does not crack unknown passwords, and we think that is the right boundary.
