Convert Word files to PDF that look the same everywhere

A PDF looks the same on every device, which makes it the safest way to share a finished Word file, submit it to a portal or send it for printing. This converter accepts .doc, .docx, .odt, .rtf and .txt files and turns them into a clean PDF in a few seconds, without installing Office or signing up.

Converting office documents properly needs a full office engine, so this tool works differently from our in-browser tools. Your file is sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection to our own server in Germany (EU), converted, sent back to you and deleted immediately. It is never stored, never shared and never used for anything else. Files can be up to 50 MB. The conversion uses LibreOffice, a mature open-source office suite, which handles the vast majority of documents very well.

Headers, footers, tables, images, links and page breaks carry over to the PDF, and the page size and margins you set in Word are kept. If a font used in your document isn't embedded or available on the server, a similar font is substituted, so spacing can shift slightly; embedding fonts or using common fonts avoids this. If the resulting PDF is too big, run it through Compress PDF afterwards.

Our take

We convert Word to PDF when we are on a machine without Office, such as a borrowed laptop or a Chromebook, and a DOCX has to become a fixed document for an application or a printer.

The file is uploaded to our server in Germany and deleted right after conversion. Our advice is to embed unusual fonts in the document or stick to common ones, because a font the server does not have gets replaced and line breaks can move.

The pitfall: tracked changes and comments may show up in ways you did not expect, so accept or remove them first. If you have Word installed, Save As PDF there keeps your exact fonts and is our first recommendation. Afterwards, Merge PDF or Add Page Numbers can finish the bundle.
