Convert Excel files to PDF that look the same everywhere

A PDF looks the same on every device, which makes it the safest way to share a finished Excel file, submit it to a portal or send it for printing. This converter accepts .xls, .xlsx, .ods and .csv files and turns them into a clean PDF in a few seconds, without installing Office or signing up.

Converting office documents properly needs a full office engine, so this tool works differently from our in-browser tools. Your file is sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection to our own server in Germany (EU), converted, sent back to you and deleted immediately. It is never stored, never shared and never used for anything else. Files can be up to 50 MB. The conversion uses LibreOffice, a mature open-source office suite, which handles the vast majority of documents very well.

Every sheet in the workbook is converted, using the print areas and page setup saved in the file. Wide sheets may split across pages, so setting landscape orientation or fit-to-width in Excel before converting gives the neatest result. If a font used in your document isn't embedded or available on the server, a similar font is substituted, so spacing can shift slightly; embedding fonts or using common fonts avoids this. If the resulting PDF is too big, run it through Compress PDF afterwards.

Our take

We use Excel to PDF for sharing figures that should not be edited: a budget sent to a committee, a price list for a client, or a timesheet that has to be attached to an invoice.

The workbook goes to our server in Germany and is deleted immediately after conversion. Before uploading we set the print area and page orientation in the spreadsheet itself, because a PDF follows the print layout, not what you see on screen.

The pitfall we see all the time: wide sheets split across many pages with a column or two on each. Set landscape and fit to one page wide in Excel first. If the workbook contains confidential tabs, delete them before converting, because hidden sheets are best not sent anywhere.
