Online PDF tools compared head to head

When two PDF sites both promise to merge, compress and convert your files for free, the real differences hide in the details: how far the free tier goes before a paywall appears, whether you must sign in, where your document travels while it is processed, and what happens when you need something beyond the basics. These pages put two well-known services side by side and try to answer one practical question: which of the two should you open for the job in front of you?

Every comparison follows the same method. We read each provider's public pricing, feature and security pages, try the common tasks ourselves, and write down only what we could confirm at the time of writing in October 2026. Where a provider does not publish a clear figure, we describe the limit in words rather than guessing a number. Plans, quotas and prices change frequently, so treat every competitor detail as a dated snapshot and check the provider's own site before you pay for anything.

We also try to be fair in both directions. Each head-to-head page states plainly when the first tool wins, when the second one wins, and when neither is ideal. Some of these services have excellent desktop software, signature workflows or editors that we do not attempt to match, and we say so.

Finally, we are not a neutral referee: pdfdots is our own product, and it appears as a third option on every page. It has a free plan with a free account and optional paid plans, shows no ads, and runs most tools inside your browser so the file never leaves your device. We include it because for many everyday tasks it is a reasonable answer, not because it always wins.
