pdfdots as a Xodo alternative: an honest comparison
Last reviewed:
Xodo is a serious PDF product. It is made by Apryse, the company behind a commercial PDF SDK, and it shows: there is a web version with 40 online tools, a desktop app called PDF Studio for Windows, macOS and Linux, mobile apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, an AI chat tool called AskPDF and a separate e-signature service, Xodo Sign. If you want one vendor for every device, Xodo covers a lot of ground.
People usually look for a Xodo alternative for more everyday reasons. The free web tier allows one free action per day, which is gone after a single merge. The pricing is split across Web, Desktop, Suite, mobile in-app subscriptions and Xodo Sign, so it takes a while to work out what you actually need. And the web tools process files on remote servers, which some people would rather avoid for contracts, payslips or medical letters.
We built pdfdots around those points: a free plan with 3 tasks a day, no ads, simple paid plans, and most tools running inside your browser so the file never leaves your device. Below we compare the two side by side, say clearly where Xodo is the better choice, and show how to do the usual Xodo jobs in pdfdots.

How Xodo and pdfdots differ in practice
The biggest practical difference is the shape of each product. Xodo is a family of apps: Xodo Web in the browser, PDF Studio on the desktop, Xodo Mobile on phones and tablets, Xodo Sign for signature requests and AskPDF for AI questions about a document. Each has its own plan, and the Document Suite bundles several of them. pdfdots is one set of 37 tools with one account, one price list and the same My files storage on the web and in the PDF Dots mobile app.
The second difference is where the work happens. When you use a Xodo web tool, the file is uploaded and processed on their side. Xodo states that files are encrypted at rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS 1.2 or newer, which is a solid baseline. With pdfdots, tools like Merge PDF, Compress PDF, Redact PDF and OCR PDF run in your own browser tab, so there is nothing to upload in the first place. The trade-off is that your device does the work, so a very large job on an older phone can take longer than it would on a server.
The third difference is the free allowance. One free action per day on Xodo Web is enough to try the service, not to finish a typical task that needs, say, a merge followed by a compress. Our free plan allows 3 tasks a day with files up to 10 MB, which covers most light personal use. Neither free plan is unlimited, and we would not claim otherwise.
When Xodo is the better choice
Xodo does several things we do not try to do, and in these cases we would point you there:
- You want a full desktop PDF editor that works completely offline with batch processing. PDF Studio runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and pdfdots has no desktop app.
- You dislike subscriptions. The PDF Studio perpetual license costs $240 per user, paid once, with 12 months of upgrades on up to two devices, at the time of writing in October 2026.
- You work with unusual formats such as DICOM medical images, or you need PDF/A validation, a DOCX editor or text comparison in the same place.
- You want to ask an AI questions about a long PDF. AskPDF does that; pdfdots has no AI chat tool.
- You want a dedicated e-signature product. Xodo Sign is a separate signing service, while our send-for-signature flow is built into the Studio and invites each signer by e-mail with a private link.
- You work in Google Workspace, which has a Xodo app in its Marketplace, or on Apple Vision Pro, where Xodo's App Store listing includes visionOS support.
Doing your usual Xodo tasks in pdfdots
Most people come to Xodo for a handful of jobs. Merge PDF combines several files into one, and Compress PDF shrinks a file for e-mail without uploading it. Redact PDF hides sensitive text and areas, again inside the browser. OCR PDF turns a scan into a searchable document locally, with no mobile subscription needed to get to it. Compare PDF helps you spot the differences between two versions of a contract.
For signing, Sign PDF places your own signature on the page in the browser, and you can keep a saved signature for next time. If you need other people to sign, the Studio's send-for-signature flow supports ordered signers, reminders, an audit trail and a certificate page. It is a simple electronic signature, not a qualified one, and the free plan includes 3 sign requests a month. Office conversions such as PDF to Word or Excel to PDF run on our server in Germany and the file is deleted right after the result is returned.
If you need to keep results, My files stores them encrypted with AES-256-GCM on servers in Germany, and fillable templates for invoices, NDAs and resumes give you a starting point without a separate editor.
Privacy: where your files go
Apryse's privacy notice says it does not sell personal data, and Xodo publishes its encryption standards, which we appreciate. It also says data may be processed in Canada, the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom and other countries where Apryse or its providers have facilities, and that its AI features use OpenAI and Google infrastructure. We could not find a specific retention period for files uploaded to the web tools; the notice says data is kept as long as necessary for its purpose. Apryse websites also use analytics with session replay and advertising networks, and the iOS app declares usage data as used for tracking.
Our approach is simpler to describe. For most tools there is no upload at all. For the few server tools, the file goes to our server in Nuremberg, Germany, and is deleted as soon as the result comes back. We show no ads and do not sell data. If a document is sensitive, a tool that never uploads it is the most private option: on pdfdots that means the browser-based tools, and on Xodo it means the offline PDF Studio desktop app.
Pricing without the puzzle
Xodo's list prices at the time of writing in October 2026 are $7.99 a month for Xodo Web and $9.99 a month for Desktop, both billed annually, with the Document Suite listed at $14.99 a month and a promotional annual price for new subscribers through the end of 2026. On iOS, Xodo Mobile is $11.99 a month or $107.99 a year as an in-app purchase. The web trial lasts 3 days and requires a payment method, subscriptions auto-renew, and refunds are generally not given except where law requires them, so it is worth reading the terms before you start a trial.
pdfdots has three plans: Bronze at $2.99 a month or $23.99 a year (20 tasks a day, 25 MB files, 1 GB storage), Silver at $5.99 a month or $47.99 a year (no daily task limit, 100 MB files, 10 GB storage) and Gold at $11.99 a month or $95.99 a year (no daily limit, 250 MB files, 50 GB storage, unlimited sign requests). For occasional use, the free plan is often all you need.

Frequently asked questions
Is pdfdots a free alternative to Xodo?
For light use, yes. The free plan gives you 3 tasks a day, files up to 10 MB and 100 MB of storage. Xodo's free web tier allows one free action per day. Neither free plan is unlimited; our paid plans start at $2.99 a month.
Does pdfdots upload my files like Xodo Web does?
Most pdfdots tools do not upload anything; they run in your browser. Office conversions, PDF/A, grayscale and HTML to PDF run on our server in Germany and the file is deleted right after the result is returned. Xodo's web tools process files on their servers, while its PDF Studio desktop app works offline.
Can pdfdots replace Xodo PDF Studio?
Not completely. PDF Studio is a full offline desktop editor with batch processing on Windows, macOS and Linux. pdfdots covers common jobs such as merging, compressing, splitting, OCR, redaction and signing in the browser, but it has no desktop app.
Does OCR in pdfdots upload my scan?
No. OCR PDF runs in your browser, so the scan stays on your device. On Xodo, the web OCR Converter is available, and on iOS saving scans as searchable PDFs is part of the paid subscription.
How does signing compare with Xodo Sign?
Xodo Sign is a dedicated e-signature product with a free plan of up to 5 documents a month and paid plans from $10 per user a month billed yearly. pdfdots includes Sign PDF and a send-for-signature flow with ordered signers, e-mail invitations, automatic reminders and an audit trail, and it is a simple electronic signature.
Do I need an account for pdfdots?
Yes, a free account with Google or e-mail. It lets us count the free plan's tasks, give you private encrypted storage and use the same account in the PDF Dots mobile app, without ads.
