pdfdots as a LightPDF alternative
Last reviewed:
LightPDF does a lot. It covers conversion, editing, annotation, signing, organizing and OCR, and adds a set of AI features: chatting with documents, summaries, translation and an AI PDF generator. It runs on the web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and has a Chrome/Edge extension. The web prices are low too. At the time of writing in October 2026, the pricing page lists $5.99 a month, $15.99 a year (marked as a limited offer) and a one-time $39.99 lifetime plan.
So why look elsewhere? Common reasons include the tight free tier, AI credits that expire, prices that change depending on where you buy, and wanting to know exactly where a document goes once you open it in a tool. pdfdots answers that last question in a different way. Most of our tools work inside your own browser tab, so the file never leaves your device.
Below we compare the two side by side, say plainly where LightPDF is the better pick, and show how to handle the usual LightPDF jobs in pdfdots. All LightPDF details come from its public pages, which we checked on October 14, 2026. Plans change, so check their pricing page before you buy.

How pdfdots and LightPDF differ in practice
The biggest difference is the approach. LightPDF is an all-in-one suite on many platforms with a strong AI focus: you upload a document, ask it questions, translate it, or generate a new PDF with its AI generator. pdfdots is narrower on purpose. We offer 37 practical tools (merge, split, compress, convert, sign, OCR, redact, compare and more), and most of them run right in the browser tab you already have open.
That affects how a normal day feels. In pdfdots, merging three invoices or compressing a scan means no upload, and nothing is left on a server afterwards. The trade-off is that your own device does the work, so a very large compression job on an old phone can be slower than on a strong cloud server.
The free tiers are built differently too. LightPDF's free plan is web only, with 10MB files, five free edits and cloud storage for five files. pdfdots asks for a free account and in return gives every tool, three tasks a day, 10 MB files and 100 MB of private storage. Neither free plan is unlimited. They are just limited in different places.
When LightPDF is the better choice
LightPDF has real strengths, and in some situations we would point you to it:
- You want to chat with documents, get answers with cited sources, use several files in one conversation, or translate PDFs. pdfdots has no AI chat or translation.
- Rewriting existing text in place is your main job. LightPDF's edit page says its editor can delete and replace existing text and automatically match the original font, size and style, so it is worth trying there first.
- You want native desktop apps for Windows and macOS, or a browser extension, rather than a web app.
- You prefer to pay once. At the time of writing in October 2026, the $39.99 lifetime plan on the web is a fair deal if it fits your needs. Compare it with the App Store, though, because in-app prices there are much higher.
- You regularly handle very large files. LightPDF's paid plans list no file size limit, while our largest plan stops at 250 MB.
Doing the usual LightPDF tasks in pdfdots
Most people use a handful of tools again and again. Merge PDF and Split PDF run in the browser and keep page order exactly as you arrange it. Compress PDF shrinks files for email without uploading them. OCR PDF also runs locally and turns a scanned document into searchable text, and you can follow it with PDF to Text if you only need the words.
PDF to Word and Word to PDF are the exceptions: they need office conversion software, so the file goes to our server in Nuremberg, Germany, and is deleted as soon as the result comes back. Sign PDF places your own saved signature in the browser. For other signers, the Studio's send-for-signature feature handles signing order, reminders, an audit trail and a certificate page. Each signer gets an e-mail invitation with a private link, reminders go out automatically, and everyone gets an e-mail when the document is complete. LightPDF says its own e-sign tool is not a certified e-signature service; ours is a simple electronic signature, not a qualified one.
There is no pdfdots equivalent of the AI PDF Generator or the AI summarizer. If you mainly use LightPDF for those, it makes sense to keep it for AI work and use pdfdots for routine file handling.
Privacy: where your files go
LightPDF's own pages give different answers. The edit page says operations happen in your browser, and also that files are kept encrypted on its cloud servers for 24 hours. The compress page says files are deleted after 24 hours, the merge page says they are deleted right after processing, and the OCR page says they are removed after each conversion. The privacy policy, dated June 2022, gives no fixed retention period for uploads, mentions servers leased from third parties without naming a location, and allows transfers outside the EU. LightPDF says it complies with GDPR and with ISO/IEC 27001 and 27701, but the edit page links no certificates. The LightPDF trademark belongs to Wangxu Technology Co., Ltd. in Shenzhen, China, according to its terms.
Our setup is easier to describe. For browser tools, nothing is uploaded. For the server tools listed above, the file is processed in Germany and deleted right after the result is returned. Files you choose to save to My files are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM on servers in Germany. We show no ads and do not sell data. If a document is sensitive, such as a payslip, a medical letter or a signed contract, we think it is worth knowing which category each tool belongs to, and we list that openly.
Pricing without credits or channel surprises
On LightPDF, the Monthly and Yearly plans include 1,000 AI credits a month, and unused credits expire every month. Translating a scanned page costs 40 credits, so heavy AI use can go through credits quickly. The lifetime plan comes with 40,000 credits that stay valid until used. Prices also depend on where you buy: at the time of writing in October 2026, the US App Store lists the monthly plan at $19.99 and an annual plan at $49.99, well above the web prices. The pricing page lists refund windows that vary by plan, from 3 days for monthly to 30 days for lifetime, next to a money-back banner, so read their refund policy before you buy.
pdfdots has no credits. Bronze costs $2.99 a month or $23.99 a year and gives 20 tasks a day, 25 MB files and 1 GB of storage. Silver costs $5.99 a month or $47.99 a year and removes the daily limit, with 100 MB files and 10 GB of storage. Gold costs $11.99 a month or $95.99 a year, with 250 MB files, 50 GB of storage and unlimited sign requests. The same account works on the web and in the PDF Dots mobile app.

Frequently asked questions
Is pdfdots a free alternative to LightPDF?
For light use, yes. The free plan includes all 37 tools, 3 tasks a day, files up to 10 MB and 100 MB of storage, and you need a free account. LightPDF's free plan is web only, with 10MB files and 5 free edits. If you need more, pdfdots paid plans start at $2.99 a month.
Does pdfdots have AI chat like LightPDF?
No. pdfdots does not offer AI chat, summaries, translation or AI PDF generation. If those are the main reason you use LightPDF, keep it for that. pdfdots is for everyday tasks like merging, compressing, converting, signing and OCR.
Are my files uploaded when I use pdfdots?
Most pdfdots tools run fully in your browser and upload nothing. The exceptions are Office conversions, PDF/A, grayscale and HTML to PDF. Those files go to our server in Germany and are deleted right after the result is returned.
Why is LightPDF more expensive in the iPhone app?
Prices differ by channel. At the time of writing in October 2026, the US App Store lists the monthly plan at $19.99, while the web pricing page lists $5.99. If you choose LightPDF, compare both before you buy. pdfdots has no credits, and its plan prices are listed on our pricing page.
Can I send documents for signature in pdfdots?
Yes. The Studio's send-for-signature feature supports ordered signers, reminders, an audit trail and a certificate page. Each signer gets an e-mail invitation with a private link, and reminders go out automatically. It is a simple electronic signature, not a qualified e-signature.
Can I use pdfdots on more than one device?
Yes. You can sign in on the web and in the PDF Dots app for iPhone and Android with the same account, and My files is available in both. LightPDF's pricing FAQ says Premium features work on only one device at a time.
