pdfdots as a HiPDF alternative

Last reviewed:

HiPDF (by Wondershare) is an online PDF service from the company behind the PDFelement desktop editor, and it sends users to PDFelement when they want offline or mobile use. It covers a lot of ground: Office, image and HTML conversions, organizing and editing tools, redaction, form filling, templates and a long list of AI features such as Chat with PDF, an AI translator and an AI detector. For many people it shows up in search results, does the job and is never thought about again.

People look for a HiPDF alternative for a few recurring reasons. Free use stops at 20MB and 100 pages per file, and OCR, batch processing and page-range selection need a paid license. The low entry offers cost under two dollars for the first seven days and then renew into yearly subscriptions. And every job means uploading the document to Wondershare's servers. If any of that bothers you, it is worth seeing how a different design compares.

We built pdfdots so that most tools run inside your own browser tab: the file is processed on your device and never reaches us. Below we compare the two services side by side, say clearly where HiPDF is the stronger product, and show where the usual HiPDF tasks live in pdfdots. All HiPDF details come from their public pages as we read them in October 2026.

How pdfdots and HiPDF differ in practice

The biggest practical difference is where the work happens. With HiPDF, every task follows the classic online pattern: upload the file, let their servers process it, download the result. With pdfdots, most tools, including Merge PDF, Split PDF, Compress PDF, OCR PDF and Sign PDF, run in the page you already have open. There is no upload step, so a large scan does not have to cross a slow connection first, and a confidential contract does not sit on anyone else's disk, even for an hour.

The second difference is scope. HiPDF is broader than pdfdots. It converts to and from HTML, handles PUB to PDF and PDF to Pages, has image tools for compressing, cropping, resizing and converting pictures, and puts a big emphasis on AI. pdfdots focuses on 37 core PDF tools and deliberately has no AI chat or rewriting features. If you mostly merge, split, compress, convert, sign and fill forms, that narrower set covers the work. If you want a PDF summarized or translated, HiPDF offers something we do not.

The third difference is how free use is structured. HiPDF's free use is limited by file size, page count and features: 20MB, 100 pages, batches of 5 files, and no OCR, batch processing or page ranges. Our free plan is limited by count instead: 3 tasks a day with files up to 10 MB, but OCR is included. Which of those suits you depends on whether you do a few big jobs or several small ones.

When HiPDF is the better choice

We would rather you use the right tool than ours. HiPDF is a sensible pick in these situations:

  • You want AI features on your documents: asking questions about a PDF, translating it, proofreading or rewriting text, or turning it into a mind map.
  • You need conversions we do not offer, such as PUB to PDF, PDF to Pages or OCR straight into an EPUB.
  • You process large files: the paid plans accept 100MB and 2,000 pages per file with unlimited batch processing, and you are happy with yearly billing.
  • You already work in Google Workspace and like the idea of a free add-on next to your Drive files, or you prefer a Chrome extension.
  • You plan to move to a full desktop editor later and want to stay within Wondershare's PDFelement family.
  • You want to try something cheaply for a week and you will remember to cancel before the yearly renewal if it is not for you.

Doing your usual HiPDF tasks in pdfdots

Most people use only a handful of tools. In pdfdots, Compress PDF shrinks files for email and upload forms locally in the browser. Merge PDF joins documents in the order you drag them, and Organize PDF lets you reorder, rotate and delete pages in one view. PDF to Word and Word to PDF run on our server in Germany, because they need office conversion software; the file is deleted as soon as the result is sent back.

For scanned documents, OCR PDF adds a searchable text layer in your browser, and it is part of the free plan rather than a paid extra. Redact PDF removes sensitive text, Fill PDF Form completes existing forms, and our fillable templates (invoice, NDA, resume and more) give you a starting point when you have no form yet. Sign PDF places your own signature without uploading anything. In the Studio you can also send a document for signature with ordered signers, reminders, an audit trail and a certificate page. Each signer gets an e-mail invitation with a private link, reminders go out automatically, and everyone gets an e-mail when the document is complete. This is a simple electronic signature, not a qualified one.

Privacy: where your files go

HiPDF says that uploaded files are permanently deleted within 60 minutes after processing, that it uses SSL encryption, and that it holds ISO/IEC 27001 and SSI SECURE certifications. Wondershare's privacy policy says personal data is stored in the nearest of its data centers in Singapore, the US and the EU. The same policy describes marketing cookies for partner ads and the sharing of device, network and usage data for cross-context behavioral advertising, with an opt-out link and a privacy contact. None of this is unusual for a large software company, but it is worth reading before you upload sensitive material.

Our approach is to avoid the question for most tools: if the file never leaves your device, there is nothing to delete later. For the few server tools (Office conversions, PDF/A, grayscale and HTML to PDF) the file goes to our server at Hetzner in Nuremberg, Germany, and is deleted right after the result is returned. We show no ads and do not sell data. If you choose to keep results in My files, they are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM on servers in Germany.

Pricing and accounts, side by side

HiPDF's paid entry points are cheap for the first week: at the time of writing in October 2026, Basic costs $0.99 for 7 days and Advanced $1.99, after which they renew at $39.99 and $69.99 a year. There is also a $3.99 monthly AI plan for the web, and a 30-day money-back guarantee under conditions set out in their refund policy. Yearly billing works well if you use it often; it is easy to overlook if you only needed one job.

pdfdots asks for a free account up front, which we know is a small hurdle. It lets us count the free plan's 3 tasks a day, protect the server tools from abuse and give you 100 MB of private storage. If you need more, Bronze is $2.99 a month or $23.99 a year, Silver is $5.99 a month with no daily task limit, and Gold is $11.99 a month with 250 MB files and unlimited sign requests. Each paid plan is available monthly or yearly, so you can pick whichever matches how often you work with PDFs.

Frequently asked questions

Is pdfdots free like HiPDF?

Both have free use with limits. Our free plan gives you 3 tasks a day and files up to 10 MB with a free account, OCR included. HiPDF's free use allows larger files (20MB, 100 pages) but leaves out OCR, batch processing and page ranges. Our free plan is not unlimited; paid plans start at $2.99 a month.

Does pdfdots upload my files the way HiPDF does?

Most pdfdots tools do not upload anything, because they run in your browser. Office conversions, PDF/A, grayscale and HTML to PDF are the exceptions: those files go to our server in Germany and are deleted right after the result is returned. HiPDF processes files on its servers and says they are deleted within 60 minutes.

Can pdfdots do OCR without a paid plan?

Yes. OCR PDF is available on the free plan and runs in your browser, so a scanned document becomes searchable without leaving your device. It counts as one of your daily tasks.

Does pdfdots have AI features like Chat with PDF?

No. We focus on core PDF tasks and have no AI chat, translation or rewriting tools. If those are what you need, HiPDF or another AI-focused service is the better fit.

Will a $0.99 HiPDF trial renew automatically?

According to HiPDF's pricing page at the time of writing in October 2026, the 7-day Basic offer renews at $39.99 a year and the Advanced offer at $69.99 a year unless you cancel. Check their current terms before you buy.

Is there a pdfdots app for phones?

Yes. The PDF Dots mobile app for iPhone and Android uses the same account and the same My files storage as the website. HiPDF has no HiPDF-branded mobile app and points users to Wondershare PDFelement instead.
