Looking for a Smallpdf alternative? Compare with pdfdots
Last reviewed:
Smallpdf is a polished product. It is fast, friendly and covers most of what people do with PDFs, from compression to e-signatures. The friction usually appears after a few uses: the free tier is limited, and many features point you towards a trial of their paid plan. If you only process a handful of documents a week, a subscription can feel like a lot.
pdfdots takes a different route. The free plan covers 3 tasks a day, paid plans are cheap and optional, you sign in once with a free account, and most tools such as Compress PDF, Merge PDF and Edit PDF work locally in your browser. This page lays out the differences as fairly as we can, including where Smallpdf remains the stronger product.

The free tier question
Smallpdf's model is freemium: you can try things for free, and regular or heavier use is meant to move to Pro. That is a fair business model and it funds a good product. The downside for occasional users is that the limits tend to appear at the worst moment, usually when a deadline is close.
pdfdots is also freemium, and we say so openly: the free plan gives you 3 tasks a day and files up to 10 MB. Paid plans start at $2.99 a month, and Silver and Gold have no daily limit. Smallpdf's free tier may suit some people better; our pitch is privacy and no ads.
When Smallpdf is the better choice
Smallpdf makes more sense if you need to send documents to other people for signature and track who signed, if your company wants central billing and team management, or if you like its desktop app and integrations with cloud services. Its conversion quality for complex Office documents is also well regarded, and if a layout-heavy PDF to Word result matters a lot, it is worth testing both.
Replacing your Smallpdf workflow
The most common Smallpdf jobs map directly onto pdfdots tools:
- Shrinking a file for an email attachment: Compress PDF, which runs locally.
- Adding a signature to a form: Fill PDF Form, then Sign PDF.
- Fixing a typo or adding a note: Edit PDF lets you add text, drawings, highlights and white-out.
- Turning a PDF into editable text: PDF to Word, or OCR PDF first if it is a scan.
- Cleaning up a scan: Rotate PDF, Remove Pages and Organize PDF.
Storage and the mobile app
If you liked having recent files at hand, My files gives each free account 100 MB of storage (more on paid plans), encrypted with AES-256-GCM on servers in Germany. Nothing is saved unless you click Save to my files. The PDF Dots app for iOS and Android uses the same sign-in, so a document you saved on your laptop is waiting on your phone.
Switching from Smallpdf: a short checklist
Moving tools is easier if you check a few things before the next deadline rather than during it. This is the list we would run through ourselves.
- Count your week. The free plan gives 3 tasks a day with files up to 10 MB. If you regularly need more, Bronze ($2.99 a month or $23.99 a year) gives 20 tasks a day and 25 MB files; Silver ($5.99 a month) has no daily cap and accepts 100 MB.
- Test your hardest conversion first. Run your most layout-heavy document through PDF to Word, which uses our server in Germany, and compare the result with what you get today.
- Move signature requests. Studio sends a PDF to other people with ordered signers, private e-mail links, automatic reminders, an audit trail and a certificate page; the free plan includes 3 sign requests a month.
- Look at templates before drawing documents from scratch. We have 12 fillable PDF templates, from invoice, receipt and price quote to NDA, rental agreement and timesheet, filled in your browser.
- Save what you reuse to My files, so it is waiting in the PDF Dots app on your phone as well.

Frequently asked questions
Is pdfdots a free Smallpdf alternative?
Yes. Every tool is on the free plan, with 3 tasks a day and 10 MB files. Optional paid plans raise it, and Silver and Gold remove it.
Is it safe to use pdfdots for confidential files?
Most tools never send the file anywhere; the work is done in your browser. The few server tools use HTTPS to our server in Germany and delete the file immediately after returning the result.
Can pdfdots request signatures from other people?
Yes. From Studio you can send a PDF for signature: add the signers, choose the signing order, and each person gets an e-mail invitation with their own private signing link. The finished document comes with an audit trail and a certificate page. The free plan includes 3 sign requests a month and paid plans include more. It is a simple electronic signature, not a qualified one; for team templates, bulk sending or integrations, a dedicated service such as Smallpdf's paid tier goes further.
Does pdfdots show ads?
No. We show no ads and do not sell data. Analytics only run if you consent to them.
What is a free Smallpdf alternative for compressing PDFs without uploading them?
Compress PDF in pdfdots runs entirely in your browser, so the file is shrunk on your own device and never uploaded. The free plan covers 3 tasks a day with files up to 10 MB; larger scans need a paid plan, from 25 MB on Bronze to 250 MB on Gold.
Does pdfdots have ready-made invoice or NDA templates?
Yes. There are 12 fillable PDF templates: invoice, receipt, price quote, expense report, NDA, service agreement, rental agreement, bill of sale, resume, timesheet, leave request and meeting minutes. You fill them in your browser and download the finished PDF.
